Diving doctor Richard Harris says Thai cave boys are real heroes

For three days, Richard Harris went in and out of the Tham Luang caves, assessing whether the boys trapped underground were fit enough to make the perilous journey to safety.

After he emerged for the final time — the last rescue worker to leave the caves — he learnt that his father had died shortly before the mission was finished.

Dr Harris, 53, an anaesthetist from Adelaide and an experienced cave diver, surfaced only after each day’s rescue attempt had finished. His job was to give a medical sign-off before each boy was pulled free. A Thai doctor stayed in the cave every night.
